Back in 1973, Doctor Herbert Johnson from Casa Colina started a support group for stroke survivors. He knew that rehabbing from a stroke can take more than a few weeks of exercises, and he wanted to make sure his patients had access to resources and answers.
50 years later, he would be so proud to see what his group has become! Glendora After Stroke Center — "After Strokers" — is a non-profit, FREE, weekly support group for stroke survivors and caregivers.
We provide fellowship through talking and playing games, and hosting speakers on a wide variety of topics. We work on keeping the mind active, and those who need special help seem to find it through connecting with the other members.
Stroke survivors are the best people to help you with the everyday problems that you face. Strokers helping strokers ... caregivers helping caregivers ... that's what the stroke family is all about!
The program gives you the opportunity to talk with others who have already, or still are "walking in your shoes" or "rolling in your chair." You will also be informed about the latest stroke research treatments and will have access to a variety of resources.
Our program is conducted in a friendly, supportive atmosphere with an easy tempo. Emphasis is on enjoyment.
• We provide an opportunity to share concerns with other group members who are facing similar issues.
• We provide support groups for stroke survivors and for caregivers. Both groups are led by a qualified facilitator.
• We encourage stroke survivors and their families to discover and develop skills that allow them to cope with their new roles in the family and community.
• We provide information to the stroke survivors and their families about current stroke innovations and available resources.
• We provide support groups, education, entertainment, and field trips.
The After Stroke Program was founded in 1973 after Dr. Herbert Johnson, then medical director at Casa Colina Hospital for Rehabilitative Medicine in Pomona, conducted a survey of stroke victims who had been discharged in recent years. Many of those interviewed had become socially isolated and had regressed in their rehabilitation.
The Glendora After Stroke Center has been in operation since 1973 as a result of Dr. Johnson's findings.
The purpose of the Center was and is:
We are funded in part by the City of Glendora, and the rest entirely by donations! Throughout the years, we have partnered with Citrus College, Casa Colina, and other community groups. We've also been fortunate to attract the most wonderful volunteers during our 50+ years. Donations from members and our extended family have bolstered us during tough times. This has meant that we have always been able to provide our meetings at no cost!
Field trips, dancing, plays, sing-alongs, BBQs, animal visits, crafts, current event discussions, music classes ... these are just a small sampling of the smorgasbord of offerings over the years.
Members and visitors have had small and large transformations as they attend our weekly sessions. Friendships grow. Progress is celebrated. Hardships are shared, as are strategies for surviving and thriving. Since the Nixon era and the disco days, Glendora After Stroke Center has been a constant source of fun and friendship in the lives of Stroke Survivors and Caregivers!
